We're trying to buy a house! Therefore it seems like a really good time to sell a bunch of jewelry. :-) It's been hard to publicize the shop, though, especially with changes to Etsy's and Facebook's algorithms. So I would deeply appreciate any assistance in spreading word of this sale and giveaway around. Plus, cheaper or free jewelry!

It has been a really really long time since I posted anything here. But I have a new sort of colored brass thing I made, and I'm really happy with how they look, so here they are. Ivy vine hair combs, currently a large version on a brass tone comb (comb approx 2" across) and a smaller version on a silver tone comb (comb approx 1 1/8" across). Below the combs are a few more leaf sprig hair pins like the ones I made at the beginning of the year.

Click on the small version for a bigger version.

Since I was sharing a booth at Birka with Hairstory, I tried out making a whole pile of different types of wire-and-brass-decorated hairpins. They seemed to go over well -- I sold about half a dozen at Birka (and they looked great decorating actual people's hair) -- and I've added the currently available ones to a new hairstick/hairpin section on my website (which sadly is pretty out of date in the other sections at the moment), and will soon add them to my Etsy shop. Here's what the first batch looked like, though there are some additional new ones now (click to embiggen):

I actually took a vacation recently, over the holidays, and went to several museums: the ICA, including the fiber exhibit, and the Peabody-Essex, and a craft gallery or two. Whenever I look at museums or high-end craft shows I end up coming away enthused to try out some new things craft-wise.

Back in the day, I used to do a lot of wire wrapped glass gem pendants. I haven't used them much recently, but I've been using brass stampings all the time, at first mainly on key pendants and now branching out to pieces that are just stamping and sculpted wire. This new thing is a glass gem surrounding by ivy vines and crystals and lots and lots of wire. I'm pleased that I was able to make everything attach firmly. (As usual, there's no adhesive or heat applied here anywhere, just wire cold connections.)

New work!

In the past I've made glass gem pendants and braided wire bracelets:

I just came up with a way to shift from a wire wrapped glass gem to a braid and back. I also finally tried out the leaf-ended torc I've been thinking about doing for an awfully long time now. I like how all of these came out, and have more ideas for other pieces to try.

These pieces will be available soon in my Etsy shop, https://www.etsy.com/shop/silverowlcreations. If you want to hear when new pieces go up, I post on my jewelry Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/SilverOwlCreations.

I'm vending this Sunday at the Holiday Geekfaire at Pandemonium Books & Games in Central Square. I'll have lots of new key pendants and new earring styles (like everything at my Etsy shop, plus several dozen more key pendants -- I have 28 tiny ones that are almost done). Pandemonium is a great F & SF bookstore, with new and used books, and they're giving 5% off purchases for every Geekfaire seller you buy something from, up to 20% total. Geekfaire runs from 12 to 6 pm.

I'm also hunting some ride help to get me and my wares to Pandemonium sometime between 9 and 10 am -- A. has a conflict that came up at the last minute -- and/or home around 7 pm. Please let me know if you might be able to assist.

I recently got word that my jewelry was accepted into the World Fantasy Convention art show, which is another juried show -- no guarantees that you will get in. So I'm going to WFC in Toronto in November! I'm looking forward to hearing some of my favorite authors talk about things.

I have a room reserved in the overflow hotel, which is supposedly across the street from the convention hotel and on a map looks like it's maybe a block away. The room is supposedly Queen + sofabed, so if there is someone who wants sofabed space and would be interested in splitting cost, let me know.

Tomorrow evening, Tuesday May 1, there is a steampunk art gallery night organized by ModVic at the Liberty Hotel, right by the Charles/MGH T stop. I'm exhibiting! Plus ModVic and several other artists. It's from 6-8:30 pm, and is free to attend. This is very last minute, I know, but if you have a chance, check it out. :-)

The flyer is here: http://www.libertyhotel.com/pdf/ART.pdf

My spiral earrings tutorial is in the April/May issue of Step by Step Wire Jewelry. Woo! If you look at the table of contents, you can see me. :-)

Arisia! Yes, I am going. A. and I even got a hotel room off the wait list. While we don't have crash space for additional people Friday or Saturday night, if you are day tripping and want to use our room to store stuff that could be fine. Call or email me (hopefully I will be able to get intertron while there). Sunday night there is floor crash space if anyone needs it.

I'll have lots of stuff in the art show (so many new things I haven't been posting about), and also a selection of stuff in the dealer's room; I'm at Auntie Arwen's tables there. Dealer's room will have a selection of the new inked key pendants, and also most of the less expensive things: mini key pendants, word keys, and the like. (Though a handful of older key pendants are very on sale in the art show.) Art show will have so very much new inked stuff.

I'm afraid I can't post a listing on where I'm planning to be when; I've briefly looked over the schedule and noticed that the stuff I really want to go to seems to come in blocks all on top of each other. :-/ There are a lot of panels I'm interested in. And I'm sure we'll go to the Masquerade (I am very sad that the 'larping and improv' panel is on top of it. So sad! I have been wanting this panel for a long time. Boo). And I'll probably hit the Circlet Press retrospective, though I'm also sad that it and the art show reception are at the same time.

I'll be heading out tomorrow morning and be setting up in the art show and dealers room probably until late afternoon. And now I need to go finishing picking chains for art show pendants.

This Saturday I'm vending at Pandemonium Books & Games' 2nd Annual GeekFaire, right near the Central Square T stop. A list of vendors is at the event announcement: jewelry, weaponry, foods, sundries, Jayne hats....

In addition, this is your chance to get a significant discount on books:
"For each separate GeekFaire vendor you buy something from, you will receive a 5% discount on nearly anything you buy at pandemonium while the GeekFaire is on. So buy from one vendor, get a %5 discount at Pandemonium! Buy from 2 vendors, get 10% off, and so forth, up to a maximum of 20% off."

I have so much more new stuff I haven't yet had a chance to put up anywhere. Come look! Come buy books! Spread the word! :-)

I have discovered alcohol inks. Using alcohol inks on metal is super fun. Those of you who have been watching me make stuff for a while are probably aware that I look for and sometimes find new finishes of those leafy stampings I use with my keys. I was very pleased to find a while back that one of my suppliers was selling brass leaf sprigs colored green and brown. Well, that supplier is getting out of the business, and didn't have any more of them, but when I asked, she told me I could just make my own with alcohol inks. So I got some alcohol inks, and the night before last I experimented:

(click for a bigger version)

This isn't a great photo -- it's making the colors blend less, and not showing the way they shine. I think my search for alternate finishes for the stampings I use may be over.

I still need to experiment more, and practice more -- so far it's sort of 'the ink does what it wants', and I need to see if I can duplicate the effects I especially like. Plus I have blending solution which I haven't even tried yet. I need to figure out what to do with some of these excellent inked things, since some of them will not work well on keys -- I'm thinking of making the colorful fish into pins. I'll probably have some of those Sunday. And I have other stampings I'm probably going to make into pins too.

So if you see any brass stampings that you would particularly like to see painted up and used in jewelry (raw brass is good because why pay for a finish if you're just going to cover it up, but it's entirely possible to do this on top of finishes as well), point me at them. :-)

I'm planning to do up some dragonfly wings like this too. They should be really pretty. Also, [livejournal.com profile] brianboz, if you wanted bat-style wings that were actually a particular color, that should now be possible too. I may ink up some flat keys as well and see what those look like...

This Sunday, Dec 4, I have a show in Newton Center from 12-4: the Holiday Fine Art & Craft Show and Sale with members of New Song Art Coop, the artists group of my Havurah, and also artists from the Lutheran Church where we meet. The show is at the Lutheran Church of the Newtons, 1310 Centre St, Newton -- it's about a block from the Newton Center T stop.

I expect to have some pretty cool new stuff. I have just discovered alcohol inks, and I am very, very excited.

Then, on Wednesday Dec 14, I will be exhibiting all day (probably until about 8 pm) at the Healthworks in Porter Square -- Porter Square Shopping Center, 35 White Street. I believe I'll be up in that top landing area at street level, between the Emack&Bolio's ice cream entrance and the CVS entrance, so anyone ought to be able to come and shop, not just Healthworks members.

Saturday, Dec 17, I'll be exhibiting at GeekFaire at Pandemonium Books in Central Square, 1 pm - 10 pm.

Galleries! Currently, a whole bunch of my key pendants are for sale at the Charles River Museum of Industry gift shop for the duration of the Steampunk, Form and Function II exhibit which runs through January 10, 2012. It's mostly small key pendants there, but there's a batch of the more elaborate ones as well.

I also now have brooches, of the key and the electroplated leaf sort, available at Skera Gallery in Northampton MA, at 221 Main Street.

And that's all the December news!

Terri Windling, who is probably known to most of you who have any interest in fantasy, is in need of help because of a serious financial crisis. An online auction is currently ongoing at the [livejournal.com profile] magick4terri community, and there is some seriously amazing stuff there, donated by people who include very well known authors and illustrators. If you have any interest in fantasy, or even if not, it's well worth checking out.

The auction is going until 5 pm Pacific time on December 15. You can also donate items if you would like; read the userinfo for information on both selling and buying. There are a number of offers that are actually friends-locked, so you may not see them unless you join. Plus, there's new stuff going up at a good rate.

Here's what I have for auction: the first wizard writer's charm key pendant.

arianhwyvar: (winged_ck)
I don't usually do sales, but I'm giving it a try this time. Close to a third of the items in my Etsy shop are marked down 10-20% (mostly 20%), largely but not entirely older work. There are key pendants, earrings, kumihimo, beadweaving, and even one of the archway necklaces. Here's the sale section.

Also, there are lots of new key pendants, which even if they're not on sale, are pretty cool. And more stuff to go up when I get a chance, but that may not happen until next week.

This Sunday I'll be vending at the Somerville Halloween Craft Fair: Sunday, October 23, from noon to 4 pm, down Somerville Ave from Porter Square (basically across from the Starbucks/Subway/Laundromat down where Elm Street comes in). There will be music and other Halloween-themed goings-on. Should be a good time!

I've been totally failing to post summaries of new batches of jewelry I've made here, to LJ. But I like showing the new stuff, for whoever's interested. Therefore, I've taken the photos of new stuff I've made since my last LJ update post (which is quite a lot of stuff) and made a Silver Owl Creations Flickr photostream. This also means that there's a quicker way for me to get some 'show the new stuff' photos up before I do all the cropping and uploading for the website, or list the items on Etsy, both of which can take a while.

A couple of especially new things in the past, er, almost a year:

Bracelets! I've been making considerably more of the wire bracelets with a braided base:

I have a dozen more new ones that I still need to photo edit, so there will be more examples soon.

Electroplated leaf brooches:

Resin key pendants:

Earthen Oxide makes these wonderful resin covered antique keys, some that are miniature collages. I bought several and have been wrapping them:

More to come!
arianhwyvar: (winged_ck)
I have a key pendant available in the [livejournal.com profile] savemia auction community, which is raising funds for a woman and her young daughter who are engaged in a custody battle involving domestic violence.

The pendant auction is running for eight days, ending July 5 2011, at 11:59pm EDT. The community has auctions for various items and services, and could use more. Please help spread the word if you can.

I'll be selling my work at the International Steampunk City festival in Waltham this weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. I'll be at One Moody Street, the Sovereign Bank Building, on the 5th floor, which is a free location (no button required).

I'll have lots of new key pendants for sale which do not yet have photos on line -- really a lot, as in at least several dozen. I'm a bit concerned about getting enough traffic, since I'm not at the largest vendor location. If you can, come check out One Moody Street! Encourage others to do so as well!
