I am bad at writing things on social media and especially here. Today several good things make me want to share a few (not at all related to each other) recommendations. (The first one should possibly deserve a blobcat icon.)

Food:

Today I had the best almond pastry I have ever had in my life, possibly the best pastry ever. It was at 'Bakey' on Tremont St in Boston. When I walked by they had someone offering tastes of a raspberry babka, and since it was outside and no one else was nearby I took off my mask and tried a bit. Then I said, 'ok, you've convinced me' and went inside to see what else they had.

I ended up getting a quite tasty bagel with lox, a truly extraordinary almond babka, and a very tasty hazelnut latte, because the cashier mentioned to me that they have a coffee+pastry deal where if you are getting a pastry you can add a coffee for $2/latte for $3.

Online fun:

From a science fiction blog I read, https://file770.com/:

Last month, psycholinguist Anne Cutler died, and renewed attention was given to her 1994 paper The perception of rhythm in language, which at two and a half pages long is the greatest scientific paper ever written.

Read it, and see how long it takes you to understand why it’s so great: "The perception of rhythm in language". https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/210768013.pdf

Dentist:

I am really happy with my dental practice, Dental Partners of Boston. Today I had a thorough but gentle cleaning and a fluoride treatment which should help harden my teeth and their crown bonds for four months. The suggestions they gave me years ago for dental hygiene are working great.

I am so very sad that Bill Staines has just died. I love many of his songs so much, and I have golden memories of going to his concerts outside at the Jackson Homestead in Newton with my family. We'd spread out a ratty blue blanket and have a picnic dinner in the summer late evening. I first heard him there when I was a kid, and then several more times as I got older.

I sang several songs of his often as Dionne in Aralis2 LARP, especially these:

The Watch City festival is tomorrow, Saturday May 8! https://www.watchcityfestival.com/

There will be performances streaming on Youtube starting at 10am EDT, plus a few live-only events.

There is a Discord server where you can chat with vendors and performers, as well as other attendees. Vendors and performers have their own channels, which will open the morning of the festival. Here is the Discord invitation link: https://discord.gg/msYWKcA7

I will be having two giveaways in the silver_owl_creations Discord channel! (Watch City Steampunk Festival -> VENDORS-JEWELRY -> silver_owl_creations)

One will be for a gift certificate for at least $35 from my shop, with no purchase required. Make a post on the discord channel before 5pm EDT with a link to any item in my shop that you like, and you'll be entered in the random drawing.

The other will be a random drawing among people who have made a purchase from my shop anytime on festival day until 5pm EDT, and that will be for a custom stamped blessings necklace or copper drop pendant.

People who are members of my Patreon -- https://www.patreon.com/silverowlcreations -- get an extra entry in the giveaways.

I'll be posting photos of types of jewelry which is new since last Watch City in the discord, plus some things for sale which are not available on Etsy except by special request.

Come say hi! Watch City is traditionally one of my busiest events, and I hope we get some good (virtual) traffic.

Adam made a Silver Owl Creations video of me! It's here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e848IctNKSA

It's been a long time since I posted jewelry news or shows on here. But the Watch City Festival is one of the shows I've been going to the longest -- every year since it started (was it really more than a decade ago?) with the exception of the year we were on our honeymoon in Italy at the time. I love seeing people dressed up and wandering around Waltham Common, I love seeing people year after year and being able to show them what new things I have. I hope that the virtual version brings some folks together.

I am delighted that more friends are either beginning to post here, or that I've finally discovered they were here already! Thus I figure I should post an update.

So. It's been almost exactly 11 months in lockdown. March 2, 2020, was the monday I went to work, went to a committee meeting, then came home starting to feel really lousy, fell over and had most of a week of a fever and dry cough before the fever finally broke and it turned into a respiratory thing. Since then I've taken a drive with A in a car a total of 5 times. Most afternoons, we take a 30-45 minute walk around the neighborhood. I realized last week that in 11 months, I had never left the house by myself. Not once. So I took a walk by myself just to be sure I still could. I am wondering how quickly, or not, I'll acclimate back. Though it's still going to be quite a while; older members of my communities are talking about the process for getting their vaccines, but I'll be in the last cohort. And I'm fine with that; I am ok in lockdown. I am a huge introvert, I have a partner I live with, I am not suffering a great deal compared to most folks.

Getting two hours back every day when I used to commute has actually been really nice. Being able to take a walk every day has been great. I obviously had to cancel my gym membership -- all the locations were in Boston, and I've been working at home for 11 months and also haven't set foot on the T -- so I started working (over zoom) with A's trainer, who is great, and I finally have some abs again, and am back up to doing some things with 15 lb dumbbells. I'm still working at the same company, which has been surprisingly good about the get-everyone-who-can-working-from-home thing.

I've been doing new crafting things, mostly with hammering or stamping copper. I've recorded some rounds in parts. I made a Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/silverowlcreations) and have been posting several times a month. A couple times a month I've been doing video-chat RP for the one larp I still play, and I'm going to play several virtual larps at Extracon -- I'm excited to see what those will be like. I've participated in a good handful of online SF conventions and have found many things to like about them -- being able to participate in things or with people halfway around the world, not having to pay for a hotel or travel to it, being able to chat and respond to other people during a panel (and in some cases, chat with the presenter if their presentation was pre-recorded, which is actually pretty great). One of my favorites was definitely online Wiscon, which is when I started occasionally posting here again. I'm also very much looking forward to online Boskone in a week and a half, which has a pretty stellar participants lineup.

I've also been able to attend a great many more services with my Havurah than I normally get to during a given year, since they're via Zoom, rather than in a place that can take me 4 hours of travel round trip. I do video-chat-based sessions with my therapist too, and that also works better than I had expected.

I have a joint video chat with my parents and my sister and brother-in-law's family weekly, which is nice, and occasionally have had virtual dinners or chats with a few friends, which is always great and I feel kind of bad that I'm so bad at reaching out and making such things happen. Left to my own devices, my basic inclination is just to curl up into a ball composed of work, reading, and occasionally making things. Though this year I also did some phone banking for the first time. I hate talking on the phone so very much, but it was really important, so I did some of it.

Oh, and we've worked our way through a number of tv shows I had never seen -- Counterpart, and Justified, and Breaking Bad, and we're now more than halfway through Better Call Saul. So all that is pretty much what makes up my life in pandemicland.
arianhwyvar: (moon)
I recorded several more rounds, and put them on my Patreon: Though My Soul May Set in Darkness (Star Round), Lamb and Lion, Hashivenu, Ma Tovu.

https://www.patreon.com/silverowlcreations

(Honestly, if you're someone who would ever like to give me a gift in the next year, the best thing you can give me right now is joining the patreon. It makes me feel hugely art-encouraged and energized, in a way that counteracts some of the pandemic doldrums. And it directly pushes me to do more art and craft and singing.)

Recording the rounds and posting about them made me remember times singing them in the past. NEFFA. Singing with friends back at college. Pennsic. Live services with my Havurah, when everyone in the congregation would sing the Hebrew rounds in parts. I miss singing with people so, so much.

So -- is there anyone who has the ability to record themselves singing who is interested in doing a round swap? I know it's not the same, but it might be fun. Make an mp3 of yourself singing the round. Share it with other people, and then we can probably record ourselves singing on top of someone else's part, and pass the 2-part version along as well. If anyone would like to try it out, let me know?
arianhwyvar: (moon)
I recorded myself singing Jubilate Deo (with myself! computers are amazing) and put it on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/favorite-round-43311529

I'm finding I'm surprisingly bad at some of the harder rounds. Though it's been actual decades since I sang something like Cantate Domino with any other humans. (At Intercon last time I got to sing Non Nobis Domine with some lovely humans and it was *so great*.) One thing singing with myself can't get me is singing along with baritone/bass voices. I've been listening to a lot of a capella with great bass singers on Youtube lately. A. also got me a nice set of headphones for a recent present (my previous nice set of headphones are still in my desk at work, unreachable for 8 months), and wow, suddenly there's bass! I've been using crappy headphones for most of a year.

I am trying not to think about politics at this point because I stand very near a whirlpool of rage and despair and it will not actually help anything to brush it or fall in. Song, art, and work that doesn't suck help me. I don't feel I can do more phone banking this week because I am actively primary on call, and one thing I hate doing that involves listening carefully for my phone making noises at me, for days on end, is already almost too much. Went and gave some more money. Confirmed my ballot was accepted. All that.

Patreon!

I'm starting a Patreon!
https://www.patreon.com/silverowlcreations

A big part of the reason is that most of the shows where I sell my jewelry have been cancelled. I hadn't realized how much I relied on the deadlines of upcoming shows to drive me to make new pieces. It makes me feel a lot better about myself and life if I'm crafting, and that's even more critical in this long depressive never-go-anywhere COVID time. I have new things I want to learn and try, but it's been hard to get up the gumption to do something productive with my time rather than playing endless mindless computer games. Having patrons would push me to create more and post about it more -- and I hope people would like to see it.

The other thing is that I've recently been thinking more about types of art and music I've done in the past, and I would like to revisit them -- songwriting, poetry, drawing. My father-in-law recently gave me a wonderful present: the first recording mic I've ever owned, and it's blowing my mind a little bit that I can not only record but overlay my voice. If you can't sing harmony with other people, singing harmony with yourself is very much better than nothing. So I expect music recordings will start going on this Patreon too.

The Patreon billing for it is based on 'per creation', which means per post I mark as 'paid'. I expect to make 2-12 paid posts a month, but you can set up a maximum limit per month and never pay more than that no matter how many additional paid posts I make. Any paid post will contain some media I've produced, whether that's photos of jewelry I've created, or art, or music, and will either be viewable to Patrons only, or in some cases viewable to Patrons first and then later become public. And I expect I'll make some non-paid posts as I go along too: discussions of where my creative work is going, polls where you can give your opinion on what I work on next.

I've put up one public post already with some photos and discussion of my results with new alcohol inks.

Time 3 of doing 30 minutes of phone banking. For the second time, someone asked if I was a computer, and said I sounded like one. I think that is not a compliment? But at least I did it. I hate the phone, but I am managing to do this without going tharn.
arianhwyvar: (moon)
Facebook is terrible but I used to enjoy posting some occasional thoughts on social media, so I'm going to try to do that more on here.

Work takes too much of my brainspace and worry but at least I get the commuting time back. Over 7+ months of working from home, I have grown used to it and now to prefer it, at least for the moment. I can also put weight on my wrists again for about 10 minutes, as opposed to about 10 seconds in March -- I think the way I am sitting (on the couch with the laptop on the low table) is better for them, so perhaps my 'occult ganglion cysts' have shrunk some.

I have not, of course, gone to the gym for more than 7 months, and eventually had to cancel my membership (they were charging the full monthly fee again starting in August, and a) super not going into boston to use the gym, and b) super not using the gym during covid. I have instead started doing weight training with a great trainer, and it's definitely making a difference. My back hurts less when doing random moving around or standing, and lunges which felt at first like my hip flexors and butt were going to fall off are now pretty comfortable. I'm ordered 15 and 20 lb dumbbells, but we'll see if and when they get here.

I started hammering words into metal, made myself a set of Sharon Shinn-style blessings, and have been drawing a random blessing at the beginning of each day. I made a set of Tarot major arcana key pendants which I'm proud of. I have new inks I've started playing with -- ranger pearls and alloys, and their new colors. I am vaguely considering whether I want to start a Patreon -- I think it would encourage me to post more about my art, and thus do more of it. I am vaguely considering whether I want to start poetry and songwriting again. I sang a few of my old songs in various online bardic circles.

I went somewhere that was not my house on Saturday for the first time in 7 months, that being to get a flu shot at a Walgreens. Yay flu shot. My dentists have been sending me 'you're months overdue for a cleaning' and...well, sorry my dentists, your office is in the middle of Boston and that's just not happening this year. I am trying to face my fears and doing phone banking -- it is already a little less bad than it started out. Hopefully it will continue to get less bad as I go. I am lots of negative emotions about all things politics and this country at the moment, of course.

That is today's sum-up state of the me.
arianhwyvar: (moon)
Instead of any other social media method, I've mostly been posting on facebook for the last few years (or The Facebutt, as we call it around here), largely just as a default for re-sharing things. I have lots of people I'm only really in touch with through there. But I have a lot of reasons to dislike FB, and the way it barely shows you the posts you most want to see, and also have lots of people I like staying in touch with who are definitely not on FB. Having been reminded of this platform via the virtual Wiscon last weekend, I am returning.

I really enjoyed the virtual Wiscon, and one of the things I always particularly like is the vid party. I couldn't stay up for the whole of it, but for the few hours I watched, these were a few of the vids I particularly liked.

Harry Potter featuring McGonagall, "I am the one who will remember everything":
https://chaila.dreamwidth.org/566375.html

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, "Stray Italian Greyhound":
https://beerbad.dreamwidth.org/385481.html

Pointed and potentially painful, re: Queer Erasure, "Straightening up the House":
https://eruthros.dreamwidth.org/343901.html

Also pointed and potentially painful, re: Women in Tech, "Pipeline":

(This one has fairly amazing source documentation)

We're trying to buy a house! Therefore it seems like a really good time to sell a bunch of jewelry. :-) It's been hard to publicize the shop, though, especially with changes to Etsy's and Facebook's algorithms. So I would deeply appreciate any assistance in spreading word of this sale and giveaway around. Plus, cheaper or free jewelry!

So, I know I don't post here much anymore! I'll try to post a little more often. Apologies for the cross-posting of this current message if people see it from me more than once. The New World Magischola kickstarter isn't just putting on live action roleplaying events where people can play characters in a magical school inspired by Harry Potter. They're also raising money to write a novel about a female protagonist of color in that world, a world where the house founders of the magical university include two women, a person of nonbinary gender, a black founder, and a native american founder. I appreciate that J.K. Rowling has been willing to say after the fact that Dumbledore was gay and that Hermione *could* be black based on the text -- but let's face it, the actual text as written is overwhelmingly populated with white, straight, cisgender characters. If you'd like to promote having more diverse characters in fantasy, and you have some money to contribute (or you want to read a book with magical school story that's a little more heterogeneous!), I highly recommend chipping in at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nwmagischola/new-world-magischola-a-college-of-wizardry-larp. Only 4 days left -- the campaign ends Monday.

It has been a really really long time since I posted anything here. But I have a new sort of colored brass thing I made, and I'm really happy with how they look, so here they are. Ivy vine hair combs, currently a large version on a brass tone comb (comb approx 2" across) and a smaller version on a silver tone comb (comb approx 1 1/8" across). Below the combs are a few more leaf sprig hair pins like the ones I made at the beginning of the year.

Click on the small version for a bigger version.

Since I was sharing a booth at Birka with Hairstory, I tried out making a whole pile of different types of wire-and-brass-decorated hairpins. They seemed to go over well -- I sold about half a dozen at Birka (and they looked great decorating actual people's hair) -- and I've added the currently available ones to a new hairstick/hairpin section on my website (which sadly is pretty out of date in the other sections at the moment), and will soon add them to my Etsy shop. Here's what the first batch looked like, though there are some additional new ones now (click to embiggen):

arianhwyvar: (tarotmoon)
Is anyone going to Market Day at Birka who would be able to help me and a number of bags get back to Belmont MA afterwards? (Or knows someone who might?) I would happily pay for a tank of gas, and I could leave any time Sunday or even Saturday night after merchants have packed up. I’ve already queried the Carolingia list but only have a response from someone who could help transport me but wouldn’t have room for the bags. If anyone could help with either person or luggage, or in an ideal world both, that would be incredibly helpful. Let me know any leads please! (Apologies to those who see this in multiple places.)
arianhwyvar: (wirework_dichro)
I actually took a vacation recently, over the holidays, and went to several museums: the ICA, including the fiber exhibit, and the Peabody-Essex, and a craft gallery or two. Whenever I look at museums or high-end craft shows I end up coming away enthused to try out some new things craft-wise.

Back in the day, I used to do a lot of wire wrapped glass gem pendants. I haven't used them much recently, but I've been using brass stampings all the time, at first mainly on key pendants and now branching out to pieces that are just stamping and sculpted wire. This new thing is a glass gem surrounding by ivy vines and crystals and lots and lots of wire. I'm pleased that I was able to make everything attach firmly. (As usual, there's no adhesive or heat applied here anywhere, just wire cold connections.)

arianhwyvar: (winged_ck)
Also, I finally updated my pendants page with the new pieces I have available currently. If you haven't looked in a while, take a peek -- I'm pretty pleased with the things I've been making. http://www.aralis.net/owl/beadwork/pendant.html
